The Geena Davis Institute, in collaboration with Picture Motion, hosted an impactful event to launch the #WhenWeValueWomen campaign. The event featured a live panel discussion focused on gender equity, a screening of clips from the documentary "LFG," and a conversation exploring the impact of gender bias on female athletes. This event aimed to inspire collective action towards gender equality in sports and beyond.
The event commenced with welcome remarks from Geena Davis, followed by the screening of the LFG trailer. Afterwards, Meghan Duggan introduced the panelists, setting the stage for an engaging discussion on gender equity and equality in sports. The conversation centered around the systemic inequities that hinder girls in sports, with Madeline Di Nonno presenting the Institute's latest report on this critical issue, "Fair Play? The Triumphs and Challenges of Female Athletes in the U.S."
Andrea Nix Fine, Sean Fine, and Abby Greensfelder shared their experiences and challenges in creating the documentary "LFG," which highlights the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team's fight for equal pay. They discussed the importance of media representation and the impact of storytelling in driving cultural change. Gift Pendleton emphasized the role of athlete activism and the significance of having role models in sports.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, followed by closing remarks from Jessica McDonald, USWNT member, who encouraged continued advocacy for gender equity and equality. The event successfully brought together a diverse group of leaders and advocates to highlight the ongoing efforts and necessary actions to achieve gender equity in sports. Furthermore, it underscored the importance of collective action in promoting gender equity and inspired attendees to join the #WhenWeValueWomen campaign to create a more inclusive and equitable world for women in sports and beyond. In conclusion, participants left inspired to continue pushing for a world where women are valued equally in all aspects of life.
