The male gaze is yet another consequence of a wildly unbalanced Hollywood, in which just a quarter of behind-the-scenes television jobs, like director and producer—and a miserable 16 percent of film jobs—are held by women. That inequality is a hot topic lately: Dozens of female filmmakers recently went on the record with The New York Times Magazine’s Maureen Dowd, protesting being treated like second-class citizens in pigtails. And now the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is investigating Hollywood for sexism.
