On June 4, 2024, the Geena Davis Institute celebrated the life and legacy of renowned poet Lucille Clifton at the 3rd Annual Night of Poetry held at the Garry Marshall Theatre. The event brought together a dynamic group of artists, actors, and storytellers who performed readings of Clifton’s most beloved works, captivating the audience with her timeless poetry.
The evening opened with remarks from Academy Award-winning actor and Institute founder, Geena Davis, followed by moving performances from notable speakers, including Lauren E. Banks (Lawmen: Bass Reeves), Anjali Bhimani (Ms. Marvel), Sufe Bradshaw (Veep), Jason George (Grey’s Anatomy), and comedian Aida Rodriguez. Sidney Clifton, Lucille’s daughter and founder of The Clifton House, shared heartfelt reflections on her mother’s influence and the legacy she continues to build through her work with emerging artists and poets.
The event highlighted Clifton’s powerful themes of resilience, identity, and cultural connection, leaving attendees inspired and empowered by the enduring relevance of her poetry.
