Event Highlights:

The event kicked off with Geena Davis highlighting the importance of equitable representation of both genders and addressing the critical issue of toxic masculinity in media. Afterwards, Salma Hayek emphasized the need to redefine masculinity to include empathy and emotional expression, especially during these transformative times.

Gary Barker and Dr. Caroline Heldman presented their research study, "If He Can See It, Will He Be It? Representations of Masculinity in Boys’ TV," which revealed that while there is positive representation of girls and women, boys' media still reinforces harmful stereotypes. They found that boys are often depicted as emotionally detached, aggressive, and involved in high-risk behaviors.

The panel discussion, moderated by GDI CEO Madeline Di Nonno, featured Justin Baldoni, Wade Davis, and Joshua Rush. Justin Baldoni shared his experiences in challenging traditional masculinity through his work and personal life, and emphasized the importance of vulnerability and emotional intelligence. Wade Davis discussed the need for parents to engage in meaningful conversations with their sons about masculinity and to model healthy behaviors. Joshua Rush talked about the impact of his role as the first openly LGBTQ+ character on Disney Channel and the importance of representation in media for inspiring young people to be their authentic selves.

Celine Bonnaire and Gary Barker concluded the event by introducing the Global Boyhood Initiative, aimed at guiding boys to express emotions healthily, embrace diversity, and challenge stereotypes.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Inclusive Representation: To redefine masculinity, boys need to see diverse and complex male characters in media who express a full range of emotions and engage in positive behaviors.
  2. Parental Engagement: Parents should have open, honest conversations with their sons about masculinity and encourage them to question and redefine traditional gender roles.
  3. Modeling Behavior: Adults, especially men, should model healthy behaviors, demonstrating vulnerability and emotional intelligence to the younger generation.
  4. Educational Content: Media creators should prioritize content that avoids harmful stereotypes and instead portrays boys and men as empathetic, caring, and diverse individuals.

Actionable Insights:

  1. Curate Family Media: Parents should select media that provides diverse and positive portrayals of masculinity and discuss any harmful stereotypes with their children.
  2. Promoting Emotional Health: Boys need to be encouraged to express their emotions openly and seek help when needed, breaking the stigma around vulnerability.
  3. Challenge Stereotypes: Content creators should actively work to avoid common stereotypes and instead create stories that showcase the full range of human experiences.
  4. Support Diversity: Show boys in various roles and contexts, from doing household chores to forming close relationships, and include a range of gender identities to reflect the diversity of real life.
