Madeline Di Nonno kicked off the event with opening remarks followed by Meta Redstedt from Tena who delivered a powerful video message about the challenges and stereotypes older women face in media. Afterwards, Dr. Caroline Heldman presented the "Ageless Test," and shared significant findings on the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women aged 50+ in films across four countries. Additionally, the event featured a moving trailer from Tena’s new campaign, highlighting the real experiences of older women regarding their bodies, intimacy, and sexuality.

The panel discussion included Tantu Cardinal, Lisa Bruce, Melanie Hoyes, and Anne Carey, who shared their experiences and insights on ageism in the media industry. Furthermore, they discussed the importance of diverse and authentic storytelling and the need to break away from stereotypical portrayals of older adults in media. Lastly, the event concluded with a Q&A session, during which panelists addressed questions from the audience and gave further insight into how the industry can evolve to be more inclusive of older adults.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Underrepresentation and Misrepresentation: Older adults, especially women, are significantly underrepresented in media. Likewise, when they do appear, they are often portrayed with negative stereotypes.
  2. Impact of Authentic Representation: Authentic and diverse representations of older adults in media can challenge societal perceptions and reduce ageism.
  3. Importance of Data: Using data, such as the findings from the "Ageless Test," is crucial in understanding and addressing representation gaps.

Actionable Insights:

  1. Promote Positive Portrayals: Content creators should strive to depict older adults in diverse and non-stereotypical ways, showcasing their full humanity, including their sexuality.
  2. Support Diverse Talent: The industry should provide opportunities for older filmmakers and storytellers, ensuring a variety of voices and perspectives are included.
  3. Leverage Data: Data should be utilized to drive change in the industry and ensure that media accurately reflects the diversity of the real world with better representations of older adults in media.
