Why Diverse Blockbusters Like ‘Rogue One’ And ‘Moana’ Are More Important Than Ever

On-screen and off-screen diversity still matters, even if the “empowering” triumphs found in the likes of Moana or Rogue One will feel a little less joyful considering what just happened. To the extent that cinematic pop culture matters for the young and the less-young, we need fewer fantasy films where heterosexual white guys save the world, especially in stories that serve as parables for racism, xenophobia or homophobia. Alongside those movies, we also need more movies where anyone else at all does the saving.
