“Living in Los Angeles, the epicenter of film, I find myself frustrated that so many of the best documentaries that have debuted at top festivals around the country never have a chance to play in theaters in this city,” says curator Marjan Safinia. “This series is filling that gap. I’m particularly proud this year to showcase exceptional films with women behind the camera. Documentary is a considerably more level playing field for women directors, and their work is entertaining, moving, intelligent, brave and unwaveringly excellent.”

“If there’s an opportunity to support women filmmakers, and to celebrate the rich diversity and artistry of documentary films, we’re there,” states Gretchen McCourt, Executive Vice President Cinema Programming for ArcLight Cinemas. “We are passionate about supporting these films. Documentaries are among the most interesting and nuanced films being made today. We’re known for being a home for movie lovers, and the documentaries in our series are a perfect fit for our audiences. We are proud to support these filmmakers and this series.” The second season will take place in October 2017.

SERVED LIKE A GIRL
Five women veterans who have endured unimaginable trauma in service compete in Miss Veteran America to help the rising number of stranded homeless women veterans. This decision binds them in a new, shared sisterhood, and unexpectedly catalyzes moving events in their own lives, bringing them full circle in a quest for healing and hope. SERVED LIKE A GIRL premiered at SXSW.

A SUITABLE GIRL
This Tribeca Film Festival award-winning documentary follows three young women in India struggling to maintain their identities and follow their dreams amid intense pressure to get married. Documenting the arranged marriage and matchmaking process in vérité over four years, the film examines the women’s complex relationships with the institution of marriage and the many nuanced ways society molds them into traditional roles and makes it nearly impossible to escape. A SUITABLE GIRL won the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at Tribeca.

I AM ANOTHER YOU
Through the eyes of a young drifter who rejects society’s rules and intentionally chooses to live on the streets, Chinese filmmaker Nanfu Wang explores the meaning of personal freedom – and its limits. I AM ANOTHER YOU premiered at SXSW where it won two Special Jury Awards.

UNREST
Jennifer Brea is about to marry the love of her life when she’s struck down by a fever that leaves her bedridden. When doctors tell her “it’s all in her head,” she turns her camera on herself as she looks for answers and fights for a cure. UNREST premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it won a US Documentary Special Jury Prize for editing.
